Roger Barlow, one of ten children, was raised on a small farm in northern Michigan. He obtained his BSBA degree from the University of Central Florida in 1980. Upon graduation Roger moved to Alabama and began his career in public accounting. In June of 1984, he opened his own CPA firm where he is still practicing today.
He has seen many changes in the Center Point Area and within the City of Center Point particularly over the last 30 years and in 2000, he became a part of CPAC that facilitated the organization of the City of Center Point. He wanted to help turn around the image and deteriorating state of the area. With that in mind, he was a successful candidate in the first election for City Council and has served as the President of the City council for the past 8 years.
In 1988, Roger married Shelley M. Smeraglia. Together they have 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. Two of their children played baseball and football at the Center Point Sports Complex before the City purchased the facility. In the late 90's, the complex came to be in a less tan desirable state. Soon after the City's birth, Roger was one of the principals that were instrumental in the city purchasing the complex. He is very supportive of the Center Point Sports Complex and thinks it is something all Center Point residents can enjoy.
Mayor Henderson and Roger have made many 24 hour trips to Washington, meeting with the Alabama delegation to obtain federal money for Center Point. The Senior Center at Reed-Harvey Park and the park itself is an example of what Roger has worked very hard to see to completion. When he and the Mayor were first considering the project, Roger contacted the owner of the lake and was successful in having the owner donate the lake to the City. Today the lake is a welcome spot for fishing, walking, children using the playground, picnicking, and the Thursday Farmers' Markets. In 2010, a Veteran's Memorial was erected at the park, becoming a beautiful area for people to come, sit, and meditate as they remember loved ones that served our great county. Several sidewalk improvements have been completed with the aid of federal money and more are in the works.
There are many more projects on Roger's agenda for the future of Center Point, such as the sidewalks along Polly Reed Road that are coming into being. Roger is excited about Center Point and feels that while great strides have been taken to improve, we have to work at it every day if we want to continue to attract businesses and people to Center Point.
